IPL Laser Hair Removal

What is IPL laser hair removal?
IPL laser hair removal can be a great alternative to a full body wax for those concerned about potential discomfort, as it takes away the need for any waxing. Though there may still be a little irritation, it will typically be less than is felt through wax treatments. Laser hair removal works by having a laser target the root of the hair, killing it over the course of several sessions. Eventually, the hair won't grow back, unlike hair that has been waxed.

We always have a consultation with customers prior to booking in an IPL treatment, in which we also carry out a patch test. IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light treatment, is proven to be successful in hair removal from almost all types of skin, except for very dark complexions.

Preparing for your treatment
Due to the way that the laser works, you need to protect your skin from the sun prior to treatment; ensure that you aren't coming into your session with any sunburn, as this could increase the discomfort felt during the procedure.

You should also shave prior to your appointment, otherwise there is a risk of surface hair heating up and burning your skin. However, do not have a wax treatment beforehand, otherwise the laser cannot do its job. It needs a hair follicle to target in order to kill the hair at its root.

What does laser hair removal involve?
You will be provided with protective eye wear to shield your eyes, since the treatment deals with lasers. A cooling gel will also be applied to the areas that are going to be treated. The laser works by heating up the root of the hair to destroy it, so the gel keeps your skin cool during this process.

When the laser passes across your skin, it can differentiate between skin and hair by colour contrasts, so this treatment works best for those with fair skin. You may feel a sort of prickly sensation as the laser heats the hair and does its job, but you will typically find it less uncomfortable than waxing.

After your treatment
After several sessions, you will find yourself hair-free in the regions that have been laser treated! The frequency of the sessions that you require will depend upon your own personal hair growth rate.

Looking after your skin in the period immediately following your treatment is important in order to let it properly recover. You should use sunscreen to cover any areas of skin that have been treated and would ordinarily be exposed to the sun, as they will be more sensitive to UV light and burning for a short time. You should also avoid overly hot showers or saunas for at least 1 to 2 days.

If you experience irritation or soreness at all after the treatment, then don't worry, it will soon fade. You can soothe the area with ice packs placed directly on the affected skin.
